Simulations of Early Galaxy Formation

چکیده

We present the predictions for the photometric and emission line properties of galaxies present during the latter stages of reionization from z = 8 → 6. These preliminary predictions are made from cosmological hydrodynamic simulations that include star formation and feedback, but not the effects of radiative transfer. We find significant numbers of galaxies that have stellar masses exceeding 108M⊙ by z = 8, with metallicities in the range of one-tenth solar. These galaxies are just beyond the reach of current near-infrared surveys, but should be found in large numbers by next-generation programs. The Lyα luminosity function does not evolve much from z = 6 to z = 8, meaning that it should also be possible to detect these objects in significant numbers with upcoming narrow band surveys, unless the escape fraction of Lyα evolves significantly between those epochs.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...

High-redshift Galaxy Outflows and the Formation of Dwarf Galaxies

We examine the effects of galaxy outflows on the formation of dwarf galaxies in numerical simulations of the high-redshift Universe. Using a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic code, we conduct two detailed simulations of a (5.2 Mpc/h) comoving volume of the Universe. In both simulations we implement simple, well-motivated models of galaxy identification and star formation, while our second simulati...

Properties of Early-type, Dry Galaxy Mergers and the Origin of Massive, Slowly Rotating, Pressure Supported Elliptical Galaxies

The luminosity dependence of kinematical and isophotal properties of elliptical galaxies is investigated using numerical simulations of galaxy merging, combined with semi-analytical models of hierarchical structure formation. Mergers of spiral galaxies as the only formation mechanism for elliptical galaxies can neither reproduce the kinematical and photometric properties of very massive ellipti...

Building Galaxies with Simulations

We present an overview of some of the issues surrounding current models of galaxy formation, highlighting recent insights obtained from cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. Detailed examination of gas accretion processes show a hot mode of gas cooling from near the halo’s virial temperature, and a previously underappreciated cold mode where gas flows in along filaments on dynamical timescales...

Formation of Early-type Galaxies from Cosmological Initial Conditions

We describe high resolution Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of three approximately M∗ field galaxies starting from ΛCDM initial conditions. The simulations are made intentionally simple, and include photoionization, cooling of the intergalactic medium, and star formation but not feedback from AGN or supernovae. All of the galaxies undergo an initial burst of star formation at ...
